Alexandra is a passionate Carnivalist who has been attending Carnival with her family since she was a small child. We believe she is the perfect person to represent NHC and to be telling the world about our cherished event. She shares our values and vision for Carnival, understands its cultural significance and the importance its heritage holds for so many people. Alexandra is keen to dispel the negative narrative of this inclusive event that celebrates unity and togetherness like no other event does.
ALEXANDRA BURKE rose to fame in 2008 after winning the 5th series of ITV’s hit show: The X Factor. With several noteworthy performances, including her sensational duet with Beyonce, and her debut single ‘Hallelujah’, the British solo artist’s entrance to the Music Industry did not go unnoticed. The release of Alexandra’s winners single; ‘Hallelujah’ proved to be a huge success; becoming the European record holder for single sales within 24 hours. The singles success continued its journey, selling 105,000 copies in just one day, reaching number one in the UK Christmas Chart and went on to be crowned the top-selling single of 2008.
By January 2009 Hallelujah had sold over 1 million copies across the UK alone, a record for a British female solo artist of that era. Soon followed the release of Alexandra’s debut album; “Overcome”, which reached number one in the UK Albums Chart. The success of tracks: ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Badboys’, ‘All Night Long’ and ‘Start Without You’ proved to be extremely popular, all securing number one spots in both the UK & Irish Singles Charts. Furthermore, “Overcome” went on to be voted one of the most successful albums of that year, amassing three Brit Award nominations as a result of hit singles ‘Broken Heels‘ and ‘The Silence’ which both became UK Top 10 hits. In February 2012 Alexandra made a comeback with singles ‘Elephant’ and ‘Let It Go’; both included within the second album, “Heart Break On Hold” which was released in June of that year.
Following on from Alexandra’s success in music; she then ventured into theatre playing the lead role of Rachel Marron in the West End musical; “The Bodyguard”.
After a short stint in London, Alexandra went on to tour with the production across the UK from 2014 through to 2016. With her first acting role under her belt, it wasn’t long until another opportunity arose; which was that of the lead role as Deloris Van Cartier in the hugely popular show; “Sister Act”. After a 12 month regional tour it was safe to say that Alexandra had made her mark in theatre.
In 2017 Alexandra was announced as a contestant for BBC One’s hit show; Strictly Come Dancing and went on to become a finalist of that series.
Soon followed the release of Alexandra’s latest album “The Truth Is” in March 2018. The album showcases a collection of tracks that carry true emotion through sharing her life experiences to date. Although best recognised as a high energy performer, this album shows another side to the pop solo artist. This year Alexandra took on the role of ‘Svetlana Chess’ in the 5 week revival of the epic musical love story; ‘Chess’ held at one of London’s most iconic venues, The London Coliseum.
Alexandra starred as ‘Roxie Hart’ in the hit Musical ‘Chicago’ at the Phoenix Theatre in London until the 14th of October. Before embarking on another theatre journey from the 3rd of December, when Alexandra returned to the international smash hit production of the award winning musical The Bodyguard; playing starring role of ‘Rachel Marron’. The production will tour regionally, opening in Glasgow at the Theatre Royal on Monday 3 December 2018 and closing at the Canterbury Marlowe Theatre on the 25 May 2019.
