Baque de Axé

Baque de Axé

Baque de Axé are a London-based group performing Maracatu carnival percussion music and dance originating in Recife, Brazil. We play ‘Maracatu de Baque Virado’ or ‘Maracatu of the turning beat’, reflecting the syncopation and interaction of the beats. This traditional form of carnival parading has deep roots in Afro-Brazilian traditions and is a major form of carnival in Recife. It is growing in popularity around the world. Axé is a Yoruba word, which crossed the Atlantic to Brazil, meaning the spiritual power and energy bestowed by the Orixás, the Yoruba gods. For us, this becomes the communal spirit and strength that performing arouses in us. We aim to enhance awareness of the history and traditions of Maracatu music, the Maracatu Naçãos (nations) of Brazil, the Candomblé religion and the history of the Afro-Brazilian slave trade. In 2017 we formed a partnership with Nação do Maracatu Porto Rico, one of the leading maracatu groups in Recife, and together we develop our repertoire.
