UFO Steelband

THEME: Community Creates Carnival!

Urban Fox Orchestra - aka UFO Steelband - is based in the centre of Ealing in West London. Our aim is quite simply to share the accesssible and beautiful music of the steelpan instrument.

Led by a trio of award winning professionals - a film actor, a visual artist and a virtuoso musicial arranger - we offer participants of all ages and abilities the chance to transform their lives by learning a new instrument, being part of a steelband and performing all over UK... our inclusive methodology and spirit enables even complete beginners to soon be playing with the band. UFO musical arrangements are beautiful yet accessible and we are the only steelband that we know of that welcomes blind/ visually impaired and hearing impaired players. We also deliver exciting team-building workshops in the corporate and business world and in education. UFO is part of the charity 'Fox Carnival' that ran 20 years of award winning Carnival Arts projects, touching over 100,000 young people.  Fox Projects put young people's Art at the forefront of some of UKs largest street festivals and the results have been displayed at The V&A and Tate Modern.Since getting the steelpan bug and moving into music we have continued to create new innovations in staging, banner design, developing an innovative relationship between music and art.

Since getting the steelpan bug and moving into music we have continued to create new innovations in staging, banner design, developing an innovative relationship between music and art. We've been a featured live music outfit at the London New Year's Day Parade and have represented UK in the UAE Cultural Festival in Dubai, and - thanks to support from Arts Council of England, Ealing and RBKC Arts, and Ealing Music Services - have created 4 years of exciting workshop and performing projects, from playing The Royal Festival Hall, to Hackney One, to Hanwell Carnival and - very recently - at Number 10 Downing Street on Windrush Day. 2018 is UFO's 4th time playing on the road Notting Hill Carnival... and we love it! Our latest project "Community Creates Carnival" was designed specifically for children in schools local to Grenfell and gave 300 children from bereaved and traumatised primary school classes the chance to be involved in a high-level drawing project, and to have their artwork wrap a 45ft articulated lorry - look out for the children's beautiful drawings adorning the UFO truckon the road at Carnival! The UFO team are always thinking up new ways to share the accessible joy of steelpan with new audiences, and to introduce music making to people who never thought they could learn a new instrument. It works, and it makes people smile, and that could be you... join us!
