FROM COFFEE BAR TO CARNIVAL BAND TO ACADEMY 5 Trinis developed a new initiative to replace the 70s Coffee Bar - Director Ansel Wong, Senior Youth Worker, Patricia Jaggs, Assistant Community Relations Officer, Gloria Cummins, Detached Youth Worker, Clive Olliviere and local resident, Meilin Sancho Their plan was a COMMUNIVERSITY – a central combative community space to celebrate, educate & promote the personal development of young people Elimu, Swahili for Education or Knowledge with the motto: Each One Teach One was born The nearby Carnival footprint influenced our programmes. Our first event was the making of a 8mm film on Carnival: High Mas. Interviews with participants & residents. This was the start of our involvement in Carnival as the youths demanded that next year, we bring out a Mas Band. And this is what we did in 1980 and every year since.
