Lloyd Blackford, also known as Sir Lloyd Coxsone, is a pivotal figure in the development of the UK reggae scene. Originally from St. Thomas, Jamaica, he moved to the UK in 1962 and became involved in the sound system culture, starting as a selector with Queen of the West and later Barry Sky Rocket. He went on to create his own sound systems, including Lloyd the Matador and Sir Coxsone Outernational Sound, which gained a strong following, particularly with his residency at the Roaring Twenties nightclub in London. Throughout the 1970s, Coxsone built his reputation by maintaining high standards for his sound system, playing exclusive dub plates from Jamaica, and adapting to changing music trends. He also ventured into the record business, licensing Jamaican music and producing his own releases, including the landmark 1975 production of Louisa Mark's "Caught You In A Lie," which helped kickstart the UK lovers rock scene. His label, Tribesman, and others released notable albums, such as King of The Dub Rock, and worked with artists like Fabian, Fred Locks, and the Creation Steppers. By the mid-1980s, Coxsone handed over control of his sound system to younger members of his team but continued to remain active in the reggae scene. He is also credited as being the first to introduce roots and culture reggae to the UK, maintaining his influence as a key figure in both sound system culture and reggae production.
