Mangrove Steelband

Mangrove Steelband is one of Europe's longest-standing steelbands, with a rich social and political history. The band’s name originates from The Mangrove Restaurant and community association in Notting Hill, which became symbols of resistance to police oppression and racial injustice following the 1970s "Mangrove 9" trial. The band, established in 1980 by Trinidadian migrants, celebrates Caribbean culture and community cohesion, offering a platform for people from diverse backgrounds to engage in the traditional arts of steel pan and mas. The band has played a significant role in advocating for steel pan music and Caribbean culture, with members of all ages and ethnicities. Over the years, Mangrove Steelband has gained international recognition, touring globally and performing at prestigious venues like the Royal Festival Hall and Buckingham Palace. A major highlight of the band's achievements is winning the Panorama competition, the premier steelband event, where they have been crowned champions eight times. This event allows members of varying musical abilities to come together in a large orchestra, enhancing teamwork and musical skills. Mangrove Steelband's legacy is rooted in its advocacy for Caribbean culture, its inclusive community, and its ongoing musical excellence.
