Carnival Culture in the Park 2023

Situated in the beautiful surroundings of Holland Park, Opera Holland Park, Carnival Village Trust and Kensington and Chelsea Festival present:

‘The Sound of the People’ Etienne Charles
Wednesday 16 August, 7.30pm

Etienne Charles brings the street energy of Trinidad’s iconic yearly ritual with Carnival : The Sound of a People – an exciting multi-disciplinary celebration of Trinidad’s Carnival through it’s music, movements and masquerade. The original music, composed by Charles, tells the story of traditional characters such as Jab Molassie, Dame Lorraine, Moko Jumbie and Fancy Sailor as well as gives an account the evolution of sonic elements of this most important cultural island ritual, including folk drumming, Tamboo Bamboo, Iron bands and Calypso.

‘Steelband Summer’
Thursday 17 August, 7.30pm

Prepare to be swept away by an exciting evening of steelpan brought to you by Endurance Steel Orchestra, Pan Nation, and North Tyneside Steelband. The show will close with the Lucumí Project, an independent group whose sound is influenced by the rhythms of the Caribbean and West Africa.

‘Pan Jazz’
Friday 18 August, 7.30pm

An evening of Caribbean Jazz featuring an exciting line-up of feature artists, backed by The Tabernacle Crew:

An evening with Crazy and Red Plastic Bag
Saturday 19 August, 7.30pm

All the way from Trinidad and Barbados, Calypso legends Crazy and Red Plastic Bag will deliver a dazzling show that will make for an unforgettable night. Backed by the wonderful Engine Room Collective, prepare to sing and dance all night long.
