Meet The Judges

A tradition of Notting Hill Carnival is that the parading costume bands are judged by a panel of experts. They score the bands on a number of artistic disciplines that include interpretation of their theme, creativity, innovation and originality, performance and impact. Within 24-72 hours, the results for first, second and third places in each category are announced.

Judging happens on both the Sunday and Monday of Carnival. There are numerous categories in which the bands are judged in and these include…

Rhonda Allen – Head Judge
An experienced and award winning costume judge for parading bands, who has trained and worked in Trinidad. Creator of the carnival judging workshops used in NHC and other national carnivals

Allyson Ingrid Williams MBE – Chair of the Judging team
A midwife, mentor, educator, pioneer, cultural icon and an award winning writer, with a 40 year career in the NHS.

Dr. Elsa James
An award winning Conceptual artist and activist whose work is an expression of her ongoing quest for visibility and belonging. Her father co-founded Ebony Steelband.

Karla Cornwall
An abstract Expressionistic and Contemporary Artist with 25 years of experience in the fashion industry. Her work has been commissioned by the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission.

Leroy Thompson
Classically trained musician and musical pioneer, who has worked with international artists in world renowned venues.. He founded and directed the  East London Gospel Choir.

Michael Harris – Adjudicator
Experienced and dedicated youth worker, working with young people from diverse ethnicities and different levels of disability
