Carnival was in Sonny Blacks’ blood. Arriving from Trinidad in 1961 with Dixieland Steel Orchestra, he brought with him the spirit and energy of Trinidad Carnival, helping to shape what would become Notting Hill Carnival.
In 1968, he formed the Carnival Development Committee the first official organising body laying the groundwork for a festival rooted in community and culture. He introduced Calypso and Steel Pan to UK audiences, promoting icons like Mighty Sparrow and staging landmark shows like the Caribbean Carnival Extravaganza at venues including the Barbican and Royal Festival Hall.
Sonny was a constant from early organising committees to his role on the current Advisory Council always championing Caribbean culture with dignity and vision.
His legacy is a foundation we continue to build on. A pioneer, promoter, and mentor, Sonny Blacks helped shape the Carnival we know today.
“May your legacy live on in every beat of the pan, every burst of colour in a costume, and every moment of unity on the streets of Notting Hill.
Your kind words of encouragement and support will never be forgotten. With deep gratitude and respect.”
Matthew Phillip – Chief Executive Officer Notting Hill Carnival
