RIP Sterling Betancourt MBE

We mourn the passing of Sterling Betancourt MBE, a true pioneer of steelpan and a giant of Caribbean culture.

As one of the original members of TASPO, Sterling helped introduce steelpan to Britain in 1951 and played a pivotal role in laying the foundations for what would become Notting Hill Carnival. His influence can still be felt in every steelband, every pan player and every note played across Carnival today.

That his passing comes during the 75th anniversary year of TASPO makes this loss even more poignant.

Sterling didn’t just witness history, he helped create it.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the entire steelpan community.

Rest in power, Sterling Betancourt MBE.
