Why I love Notting Hill Carnival
Notting Hill Carnival to me means everything about being a part of an amazing community and celebrating community spirit.
My favourite moment of carnival has to be last year when I was queen for my mas band and we went on to win for the fun fantasy children’s category.
My first Notting hill carnival experience was when I was a baby in a buggy parked up near a sound system with big headphones eating a pattie and enjoying watching everyone dancing in the crowds.
Notting Hill Carnival is unique because it has evolved to not only include the soca mass band community but to also embrace other cultures and music genres making in inclusive for all whether mas is your thing or not there is somewhere for you to enjoy!
My favourite thing about Notting hill carnival is performing with my mas band at the judging point and taking centre stage to show off all of our hard work over the summer creating such amazing costumes and concepts.
I am A'sha Morris and I am 12 years old. I am the first child ambassador for Notting Hill carnival! As an ambassador I take part in promoting all things carnival throughout the summer leading up to the main event. As an active steel plan player since the age of 5 I was able to showcase my skills along with my friends for a BBC newsround segment about Notting Hill Carnival. I also promoted children's Mas bands and the amazing costumes. I was the queen of my mas band mangrove and we went on to win first place in the fun fantasy category on children's day!
I have lived in north Kensington all my life and carnival has always been a big part of my summers not once have I ever missed a year of participating. My favourite memories of carnival is definitely the costumes, the music and seeing so many people gather onto the streets of Notting Hill and enjoy the area as much as I do! I love how the community come together during the lead up to carnival to prepare to welcome thousands of visitors from all over the world!
Becoming a child Notting Hill ambassador is an honour as being able to aspire young people to take part in the event is an amazing job! Notting Hill Carnival is so unique because it has something for everyone no matter your age, race or back round! I love how it is a community event and feel so strongly about keeping it just that!
